As you may know, social media has been creating a lot of buzz online. Subsequently, social media use is now more widespread, mainstream and influential than ever before. For example:

  • 72% of all internet users are now active on social media
  • 89% of those between 18 and 29 years old are social media users 
  • 71% of users access social media from a mobile device.

Twitter

Throughout May we have come across a few new features of social media. For example, Twitter introduced a new functionality called “Mute” whereby users can continue to follow users but can remove them from their timeline. Twitter proclaimed that the mute button will give you: “even more control over the content you see on Twitter by letting you remove a user’s content from key parts of your Twitter experience.”

Facebook

Facebook is taking standalone applications to a new extreme with the new function which forces users to download their Facebook Messenger Chat; previously it was optional to download this application. Now, the only way to escape the Messenger application is by owning a low-end Android with an OS too old to run Messenger or by using Facebook’s mobile web site.

Amazon #AmazonBasket

Amazon has linked up with Twitter to satisfy their new Amazon Basket facility. This means that Amazon shoppers can now add items to their online shopping basket by tweeting a special hash tag. This technology was introduced to improve Amazon consumers’ convenience and experiences when purchasing (not with Amazons’ profits at the core of the idea of course).

 Adidas/Instagram 

Adidas look to launch a unique photo printing app that will allow customers to print their favourite images onto their ZX Flux trainer. This strategy by Adidas may be a strong substitute which will allow them to compete against their direct competitor Nike with their ability to personalise trainers with Nike iD.
